Lucy is a goose with a mind of her own. When the flock decides to fly to Texas, Lucy daydreams about all the sights she’ll see — on her own! She can’t be her best in a pack! Soaring through the skies is fun — at first. But there’s no one to talk to, and soon she’s cold and tired. Landing near a forest to rest, she’s frightened by an enormous growl. Why did she ever decide to go it alone? This engaging story reminds children that it’s great to be on one's own, but even better to be part of a flock.
This rhymed story begins with gosling Lucy living comfortably and safely inside her shell, but then her shell cracks and she is out in the world along with her three brothers and one sister. Her mother teaches them all how to find food and how to swim, but Lucy's attention wanders and she does things on her own. Then, one day her mother tells the goslings that the weather will be getting cold, so they will all head down to Texas. She explains how they should all stick together but Lucy ignores that advice. Lucy convinces herself that she will be better off flying alone. She refuses to join in the vee. Lucy soon finds that flying alone can be lonely and frightening, but the other geese turn up just in time to save her. The illustrations enhance the story, exhibiting a love of, and appreciation for, nature. 2006, Starseed Press, Ages 4 to 7.
