Woolly the sheep has knitted presents for her friends—and kids will have fun trying to figure out what they are. One box is long and thin, another’s round and red, and a third package has a ribbon of gold on top. To see what’s inside, youngsters just lift the flap to find mittens for kittens, a hat for a bat, brand new socks for Finlay the Fox—and more. Along the way, subtle instruction on colors and shapes unobtrusively sneaks in…and a message about etiquette too, because all Woolly’s pals write a thank-you note.
With its simple rhyme, cute animal characters, appealing art by Nicola Smee, and a surprise on every page, this adorable novelty book will capture every youngster’s imagination.

Children's Literature

Woolly is a busy sheep; she knits presents for her friends. Mittens for the kittens, a scarf for giraffe, socks for the fox, and a hat for the bat. The book has large flaps, which reveal the items Wooly has made, and they are texture knit fabric. The top part of the text on the page with the flap offers a clue as to what may be hidden. For example, "Not for ears nor for a nose, but soft and cozy on the toes." The text at the bottom is the same "What could this present be? Take a look inside and see." In this case, lifting the flap reveals two pairs of blue socks. Turning the page presents a wide-eyed Findlay Fox wearing his new socks. The closing spread, which incorporates the back inside cover, has a thank you note to Wooly from his friends, but only those who know what an ewe is will get the pun. The back cautions giving the book to children under three, but the interest level would be there for kids under two. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
