The aim of the collection is to discuss the influence of environmental issues on "mainstream" and traditionally non-environmental legal subjects and social theories. The premise of the book is that environmental issues provide a distinct perspective, certain procedural, substantive and structural changes arise from trying to understand environmental problems and creating the legal tools to deal with them.
In nine papers from a May 1997 seminar in London, lawyers, geographers, and scholars of the environment look at diverse environmental issues. Locality and identity were themes that grew out of the gathering, and were taken as a focus of the collection because, though very abstract concepts, they offer a way to think about important issues relating to the environment, globalization, sustainable development, ethics, participation in decisions about the environment, and the valuation of nature. Hunting, hedgerows, consumer protection of the environment, and common property and private trusts are among the topics. No index is provided. Annotation c.
