Early version of Letters from Russia by Custine. Very engaging and articulate observations on a journey of several weeks in Russia. Starts at the czar's palace in St Petersburg, and ends in Moscow. Partially sympathetic, partially harsh perspectives on Nicolas. Sweeping statements about the Russians as a people ready to be oppressed, victims of a church controlled by the state, terrified to speak out in the age of revolution across Europe. Well worth reading in this version or, more likely, in the new version published by the New York Review of Books house.
