Text and illustrations present detailed information on the geography, history and government, economy, people, cultural life and society of traditional and modern Israel.
With photographs on virtually every page, and with its own daily-updated website containing downloadable maps, photos and researched links for further learning, this "Visual Geography" series title fills the bill for a beautiful and informative reference. The author has done a fine job of presenting a clear overview of Israel's history from the most ancient of times to the present. All the essentials are there: "The Land;" "History and Government;" "The People;" "Cultural Life;" "The Economy;" and plenty of back matter such as "Timeline," "Currency," "Flag," "National Anthem," "Famous People" and more. There are also some more unusual photographs, such as a refugee camp outside of Jericho, a U.S. athlete at the Maccabiah Games, and mud-covered tourists at the Dead Sea. Includes a recipe for shakshuka, a popular Israeli dish not well-known in this country, and interesting sidebars like "Becoming an Israeli," "Mandatory Service" (in the armed forces), "A Closer Look at Islam," and "A Capital in Question." Easy reading for children, well done enough for high schoolers too. 2004, Lerner, Ages 10 up.
