Indentured Labor, Caribbean Sugar: Chinese and Indian Migrants to the British West Indies, 1... Book

I had just finished reading Gaiutra Bahadur’s Coolie Woman when I began to read Indentured Labor, Caribbean Sugar so I felt ready for the deep look into this awful period of Caribbean History. The author looks at both the Indian and Chinese experience and talks about them in separate chapters. It’s a very clearly written book with masses of numbers on arrivals, total numbers, those who left, those who returned, plantations that received them etc. Most interestingly Walton Look Lai has found information on the kind of trades/work Indentureds did during and after their periods of indenture. I found this a fascinating book and only wish Look Lai had included table of Ships Passengers Lists. These may be difficult to find and if he indeed does know where to find passenger lists from India, I would appreciate hearing about it. However that said, this book taught me far more about the indentured period than all the years of “grudging” history of Indenture provided to me in Guiana in the school system which didn’t want to cover this through embarrassment or shame.
