Shapiro looks at the coal mine rebellions in 1800s Tennessee. Convict labor reduced income for workers, and in turn, their economic impact on East Tennessee. Shapiro uses solid sources and documentation to build her argument that the coal miners used sophisticated political strategy and a reliance on an inheritance of Republicanism to demand an end to convict labor, using force to change the law. A decent analysis that could only be improved by adding information about the actual convicts and their lives in the mines, and reactions to being forced into the position of strike breakers.
