Sunnie Mann and her husband, Jack, have lived in Beirut since 1946, when Jack became a pilot for Middle East Airlines. On 12 May 1989, Jack Mann was abducted and has not been seen since. Sunnie remains in Beirut, refusing to admit that she may not see him again. The couple met and married in wartime London when Sunnie was an ambulance driver and Jack had crash-landed his Spitfire in Kent and was recovering from severe burns. They went to live in Beirut where Sunnie ran a very successful riding school. Sunnie now lives alone in a fifth floor flat without running water or electricity under frequent shellfire. In January her dog, Tara, was also abducted. She survives in the belief that Jack is still alive and will one day be released.
