I first read this book in 2012 as I have been interested in Quakers since 2008.
This book is a very interesting account of how members of the Religious Society of Friends were relentlessly and unfairly persecuted in England during the 17th century. Any 'dissenter' group (Including Methodists, Baptists, Quakers or any other Christian church which set itself apart from the Church of England) were targeted by the government of the day. Dissenters of all creeds were regularly imprisoned, mistreated and sometimes even put to death. Church meetings were disrupted by armed men, beatings were a regular occurence and imprisonment based on lies and falsified evidence were common.
It is shocking to read the accounts and hard to imagine they happened in England which nowadays practices religious tolerence. Quakers (and other dissenters of the day) were very brave and had a good deal of spiritual strength to withstand what they did.
As an account of persecution it is a stark reminder of the importance of legislation like the Human Rights Act.
