Reviewer:LouAnn Schraffenberger, MBA, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P(Univ of Illinois at Chicago School of Biomed & Health Info Mgmt)
Description:This manual was developed to provide healthcare entities, large organizations as well as individuals, with an understanding of the national provider identifier (NPI) and the tasks necessary to implement the NPI. The NPI will replace other identification numbers used by physicians and other healthcare entities to identify themselves on insurance claims to Medicare and other insurance companies. All providers must implement the NPI in their practices by May 23, 2008.
Purpose:The focus of the manual is to describe the implementation tasks necessary to implement the national provide identifier within different healthcare organizations such as hospitals and physician practices.
Audience:This is written for financial leaders in healthcare organizations including patient accounting managers and office managers. The two authors are described as national HIPAA experts closely involved with the national provider identifier implementation process on the national level. Both have been active in the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) strategic national implementation process and educational efforts. With this type of involvement and experience, the authors should be trusted to provide valuable insightful advice concerning the NPI.
Features:It covers background on NPI; NPI implementation team formation; corporate enumeration; enumeration, capture and validation of individual provider; crosswalks and systems impacts; exchanging NPIs and corresponding legacy IDs with trading partners; and implementation testing and monitoring and end with appendixes and references.
Assessment:This book provides practical, step-by-step advice on how to apply and implement a national provider identifier for a large organization as well as an individual physician. The book is compact and written in an easy-to-read style. If you know nothing about the NPI rule, this book will walk you through the process. There is more to the process than simply applying for a number and the book does a good job outlining all that healthcare providers need to do to implement the NPI in their practices for external reporting and billing. The book has a short shelf life because every healthcare provider will have to have an NPI number by May 2008.
