Children's Literature

This is a fun activity book that centers on dogs and their unique cultures. The book is illustrated with puppy photos taken using wide-view lenses. The results are hilarious, adorable puppies with big heads and large, round noses. The book starts with funny spoofs of familiar holiday songs. Readers can sing "Bruno the Lock-Jawed Rottweiler" to the tune of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" or "Winter Weimaraner" to the tune of "Walkin' in a Winter Wonderland." The book is told from the dogs' point of view and spends time introducing different breeds' countries of origin and corresponding holiday traditions. The dogs also give creative ideas for homemade "Howliday gifts," including recipes for yummy, people-friendly foods such as Gingerbread Cats and Irish Soda Bread. There are also suggestions for readers to find the "Howliday spirit" by adopting a senior or making recycled gifts. Dewin fills the book with activities like a dog word search, stickers, and a list for writing gift ideas for friends and family. The book also has places to fill in ways to actively help the world. This is a wonderful book for introducing children to different cultures and dog breeds. From "The Dog" series. Reviewer: Julie Minnich
