Author Christine Barnes describes how the Canadian government and the Canadian Pacific Railway Company created a travel adventure featuring architectural landmarks set in spectacular mountain scenery. The lodges, chalets and hotels-still open to the public-are presented in three groupings: Grand Resorts include architectural landmarks like the Banff Springs Hotel, Chateau Lake Louise, Prince of Wales Hotel and Jasper Park Lodge; Lodge Retreats covers Emerald Lake Lodge, Lake O'Hara Lodge and Num-Ti-Jah Lodge in more remote locals; and The Backcountry features Twin Falls Chalet, Skoki Lodge, Mount Assiniboine Lodge, Shadow Lake Lodge, Abbot Pass Hut & Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House-none accessible by private car.

She is a former Features Editor for the San Francisco Examiner and Oakland Tribune, and the author of the award-winning Great Lodges of the West and Central Oregon: View from the Middle. She has written travel articles for numerous national magazines and newspapers. She was raised in Colorado, lived for 15 years in Northern California, and now resides in Bend, Oregon with her husband. Christine is a graduate of Northwestern University.
