This volume reviews the neurodevelopmental processes and mechanisms that may be involved in the origin and expression of schizophrenia. In particular, it examines the evidence for the role of prenatal and perinatal events in the origins of the condition. In this context, contributors review the normal development of the human brain, the ways in which fetal neural developmental anomalies and delivery complications may produce a damaged infant brain, and how such defects may predispose to schizophrenia. By attempting to explain the complex syndromes of adult schizophrenia in terms of fetal developmental anomalies, this volume reexamines basic information on human brain growth and how that growth may be best protected.
