Fashioning the Body Politic: Dress,Gender,Citizenship Book

Уже из названия книги следует, что главной темой станут предметы одежды, которые в разное время подвергались наибольшей критики со стороны некоторых представителей общества. Сразу обозначим, что главными критиками являются представители религиозных учреждений, а также граждане, носители глубоко консервативных ценностей. Разумеется, ими круг не ограничивается, ибо некоторые люди видели в определённых предметах одежды крайние формы консюмеризма, т.е. такие критики обвиняли людей, что те тратят все деньги на модные платья, разоряя тем самым семьи. Мне трудно сказать, насколько такая критика справедлива. С одной стороны, даже в XXI веке мы можем увидеть людей, которые живут не по средствам, в том смысле, что меняют смартфоны как перчатки. И всё бы ничего, если бы речь шла о богатых людях, которые могут позволить себе выкинуть 1000$. Но часто речь идёт о среднем классе, что в таком случае выглядит уже как психическое отклонение, наподобие увлечения азартными играми. Но с другой стороны, отказывая людям в самостоятельности, мы как бы низводим их до уровня детей, которые ещё не вполне способны брать ответственность за свои действия. А это в свою очередь ведёт к тому, что взрослые люди возлагают непропорционально много ответственности на государство или иные структуры.
Но что насчёт основных критиков моды? Как я уже сказал, книга будет чаще всего описывать их гневные речи (благо автор снабдила книгу потрясающим количеством цитат того времени). Что интересно, критика одежды была чуть ли не во все времена. Но конечно её пик приходит на конец средневековья и начало XX века (или точнее, конец Первой мировой войны). Вот весь этот промежуток, критика моды будет естественным и постоянным спутником одежды. В книге рассматривается главным образом Великобритания и частично Франция, но в том смысле, что французская мода оказывала очень сильное влияние на английскую.
Главными объектами критики была как мужская, так и женская одежда. В связи с этим не стоит думать, что мужчины, благодаря своему доминированию во всех властных институтах, могли как-то избежать этого. Вовсе нет. Критика в отношении мужского костюма была не менее острой, как и в отношении женского. В книге мы можем обнаружить, что были периоды, когда главным объектом критики становилась мужская мода, в то время как женская оставалась в тени, т.е. не подвергалась сильным нападкам. Бывало, что объектом критики в одно и то же время становилась как мужская, так и женская одежда.
Критики женской одежды главным образом упирали на то, что она возбуждает желание в мужчинах, что она провоцирует их и что она превращает женщину в проститутку. Автор книги снабжает нас большим количество отрывков из литературных произведений призванных напомнить женщинам о скромности и чистоте. Как можно понять, главными недовольными женского костюма были представители церкви, которые видели чуть ли не в каждом предмете одежды, сексуальные намёки, а, следовательно, руку Дьявола. Такое помешательство конечно удивляет. Но нам стоит вспомнить, что секс и сексуальность, эта та область, которая подразумевает пару. Религия же, это всегда толпа, группа людей, нация. Одно противоречит другому. Секс разделяет, а не объединяет людей, как это делает государство, церковь и армия (привет Фрейду). Поэтому лично меня такая точка зрения отцов церкви не удивляет, ибо уже к концу средних веков их позиция серьёзно пошатнулась. Интересным моментом, о котором несколько раз пишет автор, является то, что критики костюма никогда не могли определить, что же является допустимым в одежде. Все их усилия были сконцентрированы на том, чтобы описать, что является недопустимым. Увы, такая позиция не помогла, а скорее лишь усугубила постепенное ослабевание их влияния. Разумеется, как пишет автор и этой книги и автор книги «Анатомия моды» Винсент, брюки как часть женского гардероба не принимались обществом вплоть до середины XX века и что огромный шаг в их принятии сделали I и II мировые войны.
В целом, книга интересная и подойдёт тем, кто хочет дополнить свои знания. Ибо нужно учесть, что автор не рассказывает об истории моды как таковой, но только о том что, кто и когда критиковал мужскую и женскую моду. А из этого следует, что для ознакомления с историей моды как таковой потребуется совершенно другая книга, как например книга «Анатомия моды. Манера одеваться от эпохи Возрождения до наших дней».

It follows from the title of the book that the main topic will be the items of clothing, which at different times were most criticized by some representatives of society. Let's define immediately that the main critics are representatives of religious institutions, and also citizens, carriers of deeply conservative values. Yes, the circle of critics is not limited by them because some people saw, in some subjects of clothes, extreme forms of consumerism, i.e., such critics accused people that they spend all money on fashionable dresses, thus ruining families. It is difficult for me to say how fair such criticism is. On the one hand, even in the XXI century, we can see people who live beyond their means, in the sense that they change smartphones like gloves. And that'd be okay if we were talking about rich people who can afford to throw away $1,000. But often it comes to the middle class, which in this case looks like a psychological disorder, like a passion for gambling. But on the other hand, by denying people independence, we reduce them to the level of children who are not yet quite able to take responsibility for their actions. And this leads to the fact that grown-up people impose a disproportionate amount of responsibility on a government or other organizations.
But what about the fashion critics? As I said, the book most often describes their angry speeches (a good thing, the author provided the book with a remarkable number of quotations from that time). What is interesting is that the criticism of clothing was almost at all times. But of course, its peak comes at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the XX century (the end of World War I). This whole period, fashion criticism will be a natural and constant companion of clothing. The book deals mainly with Great Britain and partly with France, but in the sense that French fashion had a strong influence on the English one.
The main claims of critics were both male and female clothes. In this regard, one should not think that men, due to their dominance in all power institutions, could somehow avoid criticism. Not at all. Criticism of the men's suit was as strong as of the women's suit. In the book, we can find that there were periods when the main object of criticism was men's fashion, while women's clothing remained in the shadows, i.e., not exposed to strong attacks. There were times when both men's and women's clothing became the target of criticism at the same time.
Critics of women's clothing mainly relied on the fact that it arouses men's desire, that it provokes them, and that it turns a woman into a prostitute. The author of the book provides us with a large number of passages from literary texts that were designed to remind women of modesty and purity. As you can understand, the main dissatisfied women's costume was the church, who saw almost every item of clothing as sexual innuendo, and therefore, the hand of the Devil. Such insanity certainly surprises. But we should remember that sex and sexuality is the area that means a pair. Religion is always a crowd, a group of people, a nation. One contradicts the other. Sex divides, not unites people, as it does by the state, the church, and the army (hello Freud). Therefore, personally, I am not surprised by this point of view of church leaders, because by the end of the Middle Ages, their position had seriously shaken. An interesting detail, about which the author writes several times, is that the critics of the costume could never determine what is acceptable in clothes. All their efforts have been focused on describing what is unacceptable. Alas, this position did not help, but rather amplified the gradual weakening of their influence. Of course, as the author of this book and the author of the book "The Anatomy of Fashion: Dressing the Body from the Renaissance to Today" writes, pants as part of women's closet was not accepted by society until the middle of XX century and that a huge step in their acceptance was made by the I and II World Wars.
In general, the book is interesting and suitable for those who want to expand their knowledge. It should be taken into account that the author does not tell about the history of fashion as such, but only about what, who, and when criticized male and female fashion. And it follows that to get acquainted with the history of fashion as such, you will need a completely different book, such as the book "The Anatomy of Fashion: Dressing the Body from the Renaissance to Today."
