Children's Literature

Seasons is a richly illustrated book focusing on the four seasons. The text is short and descriptive, and the photographs lend themselves as useful teaching aids. The book beckons the reader to begin a journey through the seasons of the year. There are season icons for Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter on each page. The book begins with a section called Spring has sprung! The first line reads, "In the spring everything grows." Photographs of buds waiting to burst open, a bird's nest, seedlings springing from the earth, and a rabbit family illustrate the theme of rebirth or renewal. Another two pages show the signs of the season with ladybugs, a dragonfly, and a water lily plus a descriptive text. "Seed into plant" has an illustration of a seed emerging from the earth, growing into a seedling, then a bean plant and finally the edible bean. The season of Fall talks about baled hay, ripe apples, and yellow marigolds. The end of Fall is depicted with geese flying to warmer places and squirrels gathering acorns for the long winter ahead. "A chill in the air" talks about frost and ice with photographs of frost on berries and leaves. The publisher has put out a wonderful book that can be enjoyed by both young and older readers. It is also a good resource book for teachers and parents. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi
