Eliza's mother is a famous television reporter who gets the last minute assignment of a lifetime to cover the games in September. Eliza, however, is less than thrilled to leave her school and friends to travel to the other side of the globe.

School Library Journal

Gr 5-8-In the first title, Eliza makes a journey of self-discovery during her adventures in Australia. Hauled "down under" against her will as a result of her mother's once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to report on the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, she is determined to be miserable. However, making friends with the cute boy next door and delving into local mermaid lore quickly distract her. The teen's homesickness and unhappiness ebb as she envisions a future in this ocean-side community. In New York, a mildly entertaining tale of "finding one's voice," 14-year-old Jessie flies with the Prairie Youth Chorale from Minnesota to New York to sing at Lincoln Center. While the others are enjoying the sights and sounds of the city, she is busy worrying. Her luggage is missing; her friend Mike is acting strangely; and she is suffering from a rotten, performance-threatening cold. To top it all off, Kendra, the gifted and incredibly annoying diva of the group, is giving her a hard time. Despite the limited character development and thin, predictable plots, these books may find an audience with readers who enjoy short, formulaic series. They have just enough adventure and romance to be palatable, and they include interesting facts and descriptions of the featured cities. Maps and annotated guides to points of interest, complete with hours of operation and Web addresses, are appended.-Piper L. Nyman, Fairfield/Suisun Community Library, Fairfield, CA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
