Don Benito Wilson: From Mountain Man to Mayor, Los Angeles, 1841 To 1878
An interesting overview of a man often overlooked by history. The subtitle of the book is intriguing enough, but accurate, as Wilson was a trapper and hunter who became instrumental in the development of Los Angeles, as a major landowner and developer, politician and promoter on all levels. At various times he owned much of what is now downtown Los Angeles, as well as what became the cities of Pasadena, San Marino, Beverly Hills, Westwood, Culver City and parts of other cities. More importantly, though, he found ways to use the land and make it attractive to others, including being a pioneer in both the citrus fruit and winemaking industries, then new to California.
The weaknesses of the book are an oddly repetitive style, as the same facts pop up in multiple chapters, and poor copy editing in a number of places that either the author or editor should have caught. Those mar a book that would otherwise rank higher.
