Designated Fat Girl: A Memoir Book

This isn't a memoir, it's a whiny mess.

Seriously. Worst.book.I've.read.in.a.long.time.

I'm not discrediting that Joyner's struggle with obesity was a difficult one. I have no doubt that it was. I'm sure that she's accurately describing the self esteem and confidence issues, the feelings of worthlessness and self hatred...I don't doubt any of that. But geeeezussss stop whining. I don't know what it was, but every single sentence in this book comes across and whiny and self righteous. It was terrible.

In the first chapter of the book, she says something to the effect of wanting to write her story honestly, to let others in similar situations know that they're not alone. To let them know that they are struggling with real problems and that they may need to seek help, and that that's okay. IF I were one of those people, who were drawn to this book because I thought I needed help getting control of my weight, I think I'd kill myself when I was finished with this book. Seriously, the author makes it sound like there are no other options. Obviously I'm not a published author, but I'm thinking if I were going to write a memoir to offer insight and some sort of guidance to others fighting a similar battle, I'd try to include a little hope in there somewhere...even if it was truly difficult to see that hope at times. Seriously, this book was depressing and all around awful. I hate it when I'm disappointed in books...
