When Danny and his brothers Bobby (yes, that's Robert San Souci) and Mike return from summer vacation with a king snake and what must be a dinosaur bone, they can't wait to share their treasures with the rest of the neighborhood. Thus The Dangerous Snake and Reptile Club is born. Now, if they can only keep the star attraction from slithering away! In school assemblies across the country, kids have long loved listening to the San Souci brothers' tales of their action-packed, imaginative childhood-a childhood that has provided inspiration for nearly 150 published books. Now kids everywhere can laugh along as they read about these real exploits in this first Clubhouse Book-an uproarious tale of brothers, best friends, and the adventures only they can find.

Children's Literature

Brothers Bobby, Mike, and Danny plus their parents and baby sister go on a vacation to Lake County, California. Bobby finds a large bone and decides it is from a tyrannosaurus rex; Mike collects a jar of tadpoles, planning to sell them when they become frogs; and Danny, the narrator, finds a king snake. When they return home they start The Dangerous Snake and Reptile Club with three of their friends. Charging ten cents admission into their clubhouse to see the exhibits, they make over two bucks and feel rich. Another day, the snake escapes and reappears during a lunch party the boys' mom is throwing. Danny decides to set the snake free and sadly releases it in a park. The boys set free the other reptiles they have collected and then decide to turn the clubhouse into Space Station Mars. The book is harmless but not very interesting; perhaps it is trying to be a picture book version of the "Great Brain" stories, but it does not quite work. The illustrations are full-color and full-page, drawn in a caricaturish style. From the "Clubhouse Book" series.
