The progress being made in the disciplines of computer networks and simulation is clearly visible in networking projects. In addition to providing a state of the art review, this volume pays special attention to two important phenomena in this field: the direct translation from (protocol) specifications to simulation models, and the increasing role of distributed systems. In the first part of the book a perspective is given on the next stage in computer network development - the evolution of ISDN systems. The complexity of these systems, the interconnection of LANs, the current possibilities of modelling and simulation, and the role of artificial intelligence therein are all discussed. The second section concentrates on protocols, tools, and the difficulty of full and exhaustive testing. Areas addressed include: integration of specification and simulation; performance evaluation; simulation of gateway computers with modelling tools in the network cycle; analysis of the use of two integrated software environments, from specification to implementation; and a multisolver queueing system.
