Come to My Party and Other Shape Poems
This is a collection of concrete poems that uses the subject to help "shape" the direction of the text. Each poem helps describe a season or an event that takes place during it. In the summer section you see a poem about the fourth of July, shaped like an American flag and a beach filled poem shaped like the waves of the ocean. In the spring there is text falling from the sky to describe a rainy day. An icicle dangles from a roof top to describe a snowy day. The illustrations are very child friendly and help bring the poems to life. I think this would be a great gateway book into the world of concrete poetry. It does such a great job of using hte text to clearly illustrate the subject of the poem. They are also about events that kids could relate to, which would help springboard ideas that they could write about as well!
