From their earliest days humans, like most of the animal kingdom, have been aware of time and have been able to estimate it quite accurately, although undoubtedly our ability in this direction has gradually declined with the growth of civilization. It is interesting to note that certain types of insect will repeat particular actions with a variation of no more than a few seconds each day.
As humans gradually progressed, it became necessary to denote time, in order, for instance, to be able to arrange meetings. Probably the first method used on a daily basis was noting the position of a shadow, for instance, that of a tree or a mountain. However, this obviously had its limitations and as man started to live more and more in communities, shadow clocks were erected.
This book has been written with the main objectives of showing readers what a fascinating subject horology can be and the enormous range of clocks that have been produced and are available today.
