"Most of my verses started with a single word or phrase with a tune in it, which kept bothering me. The poem Bennygoak stems from a scrap of conversation heard long ago in my grandmother's kitchen. She was saying to a neighbour: "The man's fadder hid to tak it in fae the hedder an the funn." These few words lay at the back of my mind for forty years and then, when a poem had to be written, they came to life and began to work like yeast, generating their own power. Onnce you get a seminal phrase, the rest is just hard work."
