Reviewer:Celso Agner, MD, MSc(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description:Cavernous malformations, a subtype of vascular malformation frequently seen in patients in neurological and neurosurgical practices, are responsible for hemorrhages, focal neurological deficits, and seizures. This book discusses the natural history, clinical presentation, and management of these conditions.
Purpose:The purpose is to address the current approaches to the diagnosis and management of cerebral and spinal cavernous malformations. These objectives are fully met by the authors.
Audience:Neurosurgeons and neurologists are the main audience for this book.
Features:In a well structured book, the more than 40 authors combine natural history, clinical presentation, and challenging scenarios related to the clinical and surgical management of intracranial and spinal cavernous malformations. Since cavernous malformations may coexist with developmental venous anomalies and capillary teleangiectasias, one of the chapters interestingly proposes a possible relationship among these three as different stages of the same process. All chapters have a plethora of good illustrations to complement the well written and well referenced text. Whenever appropriate, the authors present their clinical and surgical experiences with the management of intracranial and spinal cavernous angiomas, enhancing the presentation.
Assessment:This is an excellent neurological and neurosurgical resource that should be in major academic libraries serving those departments.
