Bubba Bailey discovers a magical farkleberry bush that is home to little birds that help him solve his problems.
Gr 3-4--During the course of this brief book, Sam Houston Bailey (a.k.a. Bubba) lives through three years during which he has a fight with a classmate, is saddened by his beloved grandfather's death, is upset when his widowed mother starts to date, becomes interested in a girl, embarrasses the same girl in public, decides he doesn't want to be called Bubba, and discovers a magic Farkleberry bush that instantly solves his problems and makes everything just fine. Whew! If real life proceeded at such a breakneck pace, none of us could keep up. Superficial characterization, a thin plot, and a lack of any detail whatsoever make this a book to pass on. The black-and-white illustrations do little to clarify the time or place. The Texas setting is not realized sufficiently for the story to be of local interest.--Lisa Smith, Lindenhurst Memorial Library, NY
