Competent overview of Brooklyn history and her development into the unique, colorful place known well beyond the city's borders. Illustraions are good for the most part and occassionally includes gems like the photos of neighborhoods long altered by modern buildings. Generally avoids the curse of local histories which include extensive quotes from contemporary sources describing past events like celebrations and other public displays, a lazy approach which attempts to bring the past to life. As the working class borough gentrifies, the Brooklyn of my past (1950s-1970s) fast recedes into memory.
