Bellaire grew to prominence in the early 19th century when rich deposits of coal and sand were discovered. Riverboat captain John Fink began mining and shipping coal in the 1830s. Later numerous glass factories earned Bellaire the nickname "Glass City." Industry grew rapidly, and the railroads brought tradesmen and immigrants. In addition to coal mines and glass factories, Bellaire has been home to an enamel works, a steel factory, lumberyards, brick makers, and bottling companies. Today Bellaire has two historical sites honoring its industry, but business is not the region's only claim to fame. Few remember that Bellaire had a water ballet team, the Aquabelles. Kathy Crumbley, the first female sheriff in the state of Ohio, is a Bellaire native, and the village is the birthplace of baseball legends William "Brickyard" Kennedy and Sol White. Theodore Roosevelt campaigned in the city park where, later, Bob Hope left his footprints in cement. Bellaire celebrates both the industry that built the village and the people who made it memorable.

Not a deep book, and some of the pictures suggested deep stories that were not told, but it was a hoot. Lots of pictures of the parks-that-were. My husband used to be a docent at Point Defiance Zoo, which these days is awesome and does its best to build humane and interesting habitats. The zoo-that-was was more of the concrete slabs and cages variety. That said, in the pictures, the animals look happy enough; the circa 1900 polar bears seem very interested in the visitors reaching through the bars and had at least a bit of a pond.
It was a little bittersweet to see pictures of the Point Defiance pagoda, where I have attended weddings and memorials, in its heyday. I know the powers that be are attempting to restore it to its former glories, but the fire took its toll. There are some great shots of the young men with the Civilian Conservation Core in their bunkhouses. Nice reminder that these parks were part of the larger history of the country.
Not worth the cover price of $20 for me, but definitely worth checking out from the library.
