Decent text by Kane, which not only defines health outcomes research, but gives a nice overview of conceptual models, measurement methods (psychometrics, QOL instruments, etc.), and some basic concepts regarding analysis (linear/logistic regression, survival analysis, etc.).
Honestly it doesn't get terribly in-depth on any particular topic, so really ideal for someone considering the field, or taking a survey course in the area. I can't say it would serve as much of a reference either, but for someone getting serious about doing research in this field, serves as a nice cover-to-cover read to lay down some fundamentals, or in my case, consolidate knowledge on the topic.
