American Poetry: States of the Art (edited by Bradford Morrow) is a wonderful, exciting collection of contemporary poets, including many of my favorites (Susan Howe, Jorie Graham, Gustaf Sobin, Leslie Scalapino, Mei-mei Berssenbrugge: the list goes on). Since I received this book from NetGalley (full disclosure) I pushed myself to read through this volume filled with complex and often dense poems too quickly: luckily, I have a lifetime to read again and again these amazing poems. A couple of my many favorite lines: "everywhere as ground is an ocean here" " 'as' 'blooming trees' are one's subjectivity/language 'there'-" Scalapino. "poetry is our covenant." Susan Howe. As indeed it is. Anyone remotely interested in poetry, or in language at all, should own this volume and spend the next 20 years reading it.
