Alice is the one in the middle. Little sister Rosie is almost always very naughty, and big brother Oliver is never wrong, and he never loses at anything. Then on the family drive to see their grandparents Alice wins the car journey game for the first time — and by more than anyone else had ever managed. In fact she beat the world record! Oliver does not take it gracefully. He sulks. Then Grandma Fox beats him at chess and he throws a spectacular tantrum! By the end of the day, Rosie has actually been good all day, Alice has won something, and Oliver is in disgrace. It is a landmark day in the Singer family!

Children's Literature

Alice is always in the middle. She is not like her naughty, little sister Rosie who is always in trouble. She is not like her big brother Oliver who thinks he is perfect. All of that changes on the way to grandma and grandpa's house. Alice not only beats her brother at a game but breaks a family record during a long road trip. Now Alice is not just in the middle, she is the center of attention. She gets to pick a super special prize while her brother sulks. This starts out as fun but turns excruciating when her sore loser brother suffers another defeat. This is a fun read about family dynamics. It has a humorous take on the touchy subject of favoritism. This book shows how families dealing with sibling rivalry can still show a soft spot for a sibling handling disappointment. Alice is an endearing character and readers with empathize with her.
