Algebra at School: It's Everyplace You Are, Grade 4 Book

Algebra at School--It's Everyplace You Are makes school curriculum come alive. Engaging, hands-on activities help students see the connection between algebra concepts and their own experiences. The activities are relevant to the daily lives of students, drawing on locations, objects, and concepts that appear in and around familiar surroundings.

This book includes six units to provide a variety of math experiences. Students will explore algebra at school in the classroom, in the lunchroom, on the playground, in the library, on the way to school, and in other locations at school.

Activities were designed to meet the Standards for Mathematics defined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The activities provide an informal introduction to algebra concepts through experiences that involve working with patterns to making generalizations, exploring relationships and equal values, working with variables, and using logical reasoning to solve problems. While the activities are not labeled with the language of formal algebra, these experiences do lay the foundation for successful work with algebra concepts in higher grades. Activities emphasize algebra vocabulary, concepts, and process skills. Students are encouraged to share their answers and compare their methods and strategies. Activities incorporate reading comprehension with algebra skills and provide hands-on learning through cutting, coloring, mazes, and more.
