A Virginia Yankee in the Civil War: The Diaries of David Hunter Strother
GEN Maxwell Taylor was not a colorful personality, but he was diligent, decent, and intelligent, and he played an important role in some of the great events of the middle of the 20th century, so his story is worth reading for its insider's view of those events. He served in the small professional Army of the 1920s and 1930s. He visited Rome in 1943 to help negotiate the Italian surrender. He commanded the 101st Airborne (Normandy, Market Garden, the Bulge). He was Chief Staff of the Army in the 1950s when Eisenhower was trying to balance the budget by focusing military spending on the Air Force and its capability for massive retaliation. He was recalled from retirement by Kennedy to become Chairman of the JCS. He remained one of the most trusted military advisors for both Kennedy and Johnson, and he advocated staying the course in Vietnam until the end. He kept a copy of Plato's Dialogues on his bedstand.
The well-written biography is by his son, but it is as fair and objective as one could expect.
