Library Journal

This three-volume set, edited by Harris (political science, Rutgers Univ., Camden) and Tichenor (political science, Rutgers Univ., New Brunswick), explores how the United States political system has developed and changed over the last 230 years. From the Federalist and Anti-Federalist papers of the late 1700s to the impeachment trial of President Clinton, it explores the growth and evolution of our nation politically. The first two volumes include original essays (most written by academics) supplemented with historical documents that discuss America's past, political institutions, and issues that have shaped the political spectrum. The essays are insightful and explore how U.S. political institutions and viewpoints have changed over time. Among the subjects covered are Congress, the presidency, the courts, the power of the states, and political organizations. The third volume consists solely of historical documents, such as Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and the United States Constitution, and helps demonstrate changes in our nation. Although this set is a somewhat distinctive reference work, users might find it comparable to Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr.'s History of U.S. Political Parties or perhaps The U.S. Election System, edited by Paul McCaffrey. While each volume contains a separate index, there is no cumulative index for the set. A revised edition of this work should include one. BOTTOM LINE This set is probably best appreciated by academic libraries, although public libraries with a generous political science interest might want to consider.—James Langan, Univ. of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Lib.
