Shows the United States' patterned history of backing (through funding, training, and supplying weapons) pro-capitalist and/or anti-communist groups/organizations/death squads/militias, installing puppet leaders imbued with Western education and ideology, undermining democratic elections & processes, coups & assassinations, using blockades and sanctions to undermine economic prosperity and ability to distribute goods to population sufficiently, predatory lending high interest loans to underdeveloped countries, one-sided trade relations, and purposeful exploitation of the third worlds cheap labour
1930s depression: fascism flourished in response to the depression, growing economic strength of the Soviet Union, and increasing threat of social revolution with much of the middle class became openly sympathetic towards fascists as a result.
(1949) NATO: military alliance directed against Soviet Union. NATO's first general secretary: NATO was designed to "keep the Americans in, the Russians out, and the Germans down". Several other organizations/companies started by US to assert power and control: World Bank, IMF, United Fruit Company, SEATO, United Nations
Post World War 2: the need for ongoing access to oil meant American isolationism no longer realistic - needed deeper involvement in politics of entire 3rd world. Communist governments threatened to limit US export/import opportunities. US pro-imperialism but anti-colonialism as it limited trade opportunities
50's: period of decolonisation - US used this as an opportunity to link their economies. Caused destruction of local manufactures, excessive and unbalanced resource extraction, and development of agricultural monoculture
Domino effect of popular revolutions across Asia, Africa, Middle East, Latin America, & parts of Europe - most squashed by the US. Many revolutions started as a response to landlords & colonial fiscal exploitation
US: purge of communist and communist-sympathetic union members/leaders. Working class identity diluted - many working class people consider themselves middle class. Homogenized consumerism spread through television - strictly controlled by private corps & advertisers. Consumer identity. Conservative revival - looking to refine themselves.
