Alexander Hume (1560-1609) was a Calvinistic Scottish divine, minister, poet and ardent puritan.
This work by Hume is one of his most popular works and covers four areas in which Christians should praise God. 1. The mercy and goodness of God; 2. The justice of God; 3. The power of God; and 4. The providence of God. God is to be praise for who he is, as Hume explains, but also for the extension of his works in all these areas. The Christian must take time to contemplate, pray and praise God for all his works as Jesus told us to even consider God's greatness in tending to the "lilies of the field" or the "sparrow" which does not fall but by the Father's sovereign will. Hume's Reformed Theology comes out strong and powerful in directing Christians to consider the Sovereign Lord of the universe, and the power of Christ's redemption.
