How far is too far? How late is too late? Has planet earth already passed the point of no return? And for the sake of its very salvation, does humanity have the courage to change centuries of religious dogma, political expediency, and social tradition? These are the fateful questions that frame G. P. Hardy s gripping, fast-lane novel of looming environmental disaster and human extinction. The burden weighs heaviest on the scientists in the story who have made a realistic tally of the coming finalities. Not a burden of proof, for the evidence overwhelms all willing to look at it honestly, but of persuasion, for theirs is a message that political pundits and religious powers refuse to hear, much less to heed. Nowhere is it more powerfully apparent than in Seven Angels of Wrath that the misuse of conventional powers runs an ugly parallel course to the abuse of the earth s environmental resources. The debate over global warming has long been joined, but until now the warning voices have sounded too effetely academic, too cozily intellectual, or too brazenly political to preach to many beyond their own intramural choirs. In G. P. Hardy we hear a different kind of voice with a very different intonation. He speaks from real world experience that includes ranching, hunting, the courtroom, and one of the toughest arenas around: Texas politics and power. We may yawn when yet another academic or politician sets out to instruct us, but when a man like G. P. Hardy speaks, we had best sit up and listen. For this reason, Seven Angels of Wrath is worth reading, not only for its literary merits, which are considerable, but also for its meaning, which is critical. More than a novel, this is also a summary brief of life and death. Only to our peril can we afford to ignore its message.
