"The Disruption of 1843 was a key event in Scottish history. In this classic short survey Professor Cheyne suggests that the controversies of more than 150 years ago still repay attention." After sketching the background, social, political and ecclesiastical to the Ten Years' Conflict by tracing the development of the struggle between Moderates and Evangelicals, churchmen and politicians, civil and ecclesiastical courts, the author highlights the main issues at stake. Professor Cheyne then summarises the consequences of the great 'walk out' and reviews some interesting twentieth-century studies of that event. The book closes with an indication of the continuing indebtedness of today's Church to those whose battle cries were 'the Crown Rights of the Redeemer' and 'Spiritual Independence'.
