Winckler (Middle Eastern history, U. of Haifa, Israel) looks at the connections between 20th century Arab politics and demography in the areas of the ethno-religions composition of the society and its political consequences, the ethno-religious quantity factor (as in terms of contending ethno-religious political forces seeking advantage through encouraging population growth), and ideological and political influences on natalist and migration demographic policies of governments. He begins with an examination of the quantity and quality of Arab demographic records and then turns to comparative analysis of the causes of rapid population growth, socioeconomic consequences of high natural increase rates (especially in terms of unemployment), and the changing perceptions and policies towards population growth since the 1950s.
