Making Sense of Wine Tasting: Your Essential Guide to Enjoying Wine
This is not a long book (less than 200 pages) and is well written and illustrated; I've owned previous editions of this production by Alan Young, an Australian and experience wine judge and writer. The author goes into considerable detail concerning the 'sensory evaluation' of wine with discussions that delve into human anatomy (i.e. sensory organs), organic chemistry, and 'ins & outs' of judging wine accurately; many myths about wine tasting are challenged and debunked!
I would not recommend this book to the beginning wine enthusiast; many of the judging details in particular were beyond my interest (and I've been drinking wine for 40 yrs!); also I understood the anatomy and chemistry discussions easily being a physician (and still remembering some of my organic chemistry from college); however, for a lay person w/o this knowledge the book will be a more difficult read. In addition, the author has numerous exercises to reinforce his points - these would be fun in a group but would be a chore to setup and complete.
I purchased another 'wine tasting' book at the same time, i.e. an updated version of Jancis Robinson's How to Taste: A Guide to Enjoying Wine (2008) - will shortly start reading this one which would be my recommendation for a beginning discussion on this topic - enjoy!
