William Cary Hattan was a civil engineer who built large sections of the Western Maryland and Clinchfield railroads, which he documented in log books, notes and photographs. Hattan died in 1929, when his daughter, Mary Hattan Bogart (the author), was just 12 years old. In 1966, following the death of her mother, Bogart found her father's journals in a trunk. She has spent recent years combining her father's personal account with other historical documentation (newspaper articles and other written reports) to create a volume which will appeal to historians and railroad buffs alike. Illustrated with nearly 300 photos, maps, and diagrams.
