This biography of Lydia Miller, the wife of well-known writer Hugh Miller, brings to life an individual who until now has remained relatively unknown. This book reveals Lydia's upbringing, education, and the romantic story of how she fell in love and married a "plain working man," as Hugh described himself, with little formal education and apparently few prospects. Detailed are major life events such as the tragedy of the early death in Cromarty of the couple's first-born child and their move to Edinburgh in 1840 when Hugh was appointed editor of the Witness newspaper. Lydia's life until her death in 1856 is described, including how, to the detriment of her own health, she devoted the first six years of her widowhood to editing and publishing posthumously her husband's writings, which otherwise might never have become available to the public.
Author Biography: Elizabeth Sutherland is a writer for The Scots Magazine and the author of The Black Isles: A Portrait of the Past.
