Enlightenment and Reform in Eighteenth-Century Europe
De Middeleeuwen zijn algemeen beschouwd als de meest onbekende en meest onderschatte periode van onze Europese geschiedenis. Dit vuistdikke boek ambieert hieraan iets te doen. Ze beschrijft zowel religieus, juridisch, politiek als cultureel hoe ons continent zich over een periode van 1000 jaar heeft ontwikkeld. Gaande van de val van het West-Romeinse Rijk tot de ontdekkingsreizen van Columbus. Op politiek vlak zien we hoe koningen van Germaanse origine het machtsvacuüm invullen en zich met het aura van het antieke Rome omringen. Karel de Grote is daarvan het exponent. Externe invallen zorgen voor een verbrokkeling van diens Rijk. We zien een eeuwenlang worstelen om de macht: Kerk versus Staat, suzerein versus vazal, bestaande machten versus Vikingen, Magyaren en Arabieren/ Ottomanen. Vooral de religieuze en juridische evolutie zijn boeiend.
De minpunten aan het boek zijn dat het niet alleen letterlijk zwaar is, maar ook academisch zwaar is geschreven. Het verraadt ook een nogal politiek-correcte insteek: de Kerk zorgde 'onvoldoende voor wetenschappelijke vernieuwing', was corrupt. De islam daarentegen was 'vredelievend'. Op sommige plaatsen in het boek worden Middeleeuwers zelfs 'barbaars' genoemd. Bedoeld of onbedoeld versterken de auteurs hiermee enkel maar de foute cliché's die bestaan over Middeleeuws Europa. Handig zijn wel de aandachtspunten op het einde van elk hoofdstuk en het glossarium en de tijdslijn.
