Examining television drama from a semiotic viewpoint, this study explains the need to develop semiotic theory further in order to acknowledge all the sign systems that practitioners have exploited in successful television drama. A selection of major television dramas are examined from a theoretical perspective, linking formalism and realism. These dramas include ER, NYPD Blue, The Tribe, The Politician's Wife, Big Women, Wilderness, Inspector Morse, Cracker, Fitz, and The X-Files.
