Teaching methods in the past have left most adults today feeling alienated from poetry, assuming it difficult and irrelevant. Today, the approach is more flexible and there is a wealth of poetry available for children that is accessible and enjoyable. Finding and choosing this material, however, can be a time-consuming challenge for the English teacher: Barrie Wade's book provides a practical guide. Over 350 entries are arranged in three main sections: single author collections, edited anthologies and resource books anthologies particularly designed for classroom use. Within each section entries are arranged alphabetically. Each entry includes the author, title, publication details, a review of the book and suggested age range of readers. The reviews indicate the subject matter of the poetry, the style of the poet and the quality of the illustrations and design. Entries range from Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear to Ted Hughes and Simon Armitage. Other sections provide up-to-date information on organising a poetry festival, inviting poets into school, resources for poetry teaching and where to obtain further advice; and information about UK National and Regional Arts support for poetry, poetry competitions and publishing poetry.
