Mike Harding presents a selection of the most fascinating manifestations of green men, gargoyles, misericords, and stained glass, explaining the background and meaning behind each subject in text and illustrations.
Gargoyles that grin and leer down from roofs and towers of medieval churches have stood for centuries warding off evil and this book depicts the many fearsome faces of these monstrosities throughout history. The creatures reached their flowering in the Middle Ages yet their story goes far beyond that time to the very beginnings of art, when man created demons to scare away demons. The photographs in this small book present the range of these gargoyles in full color.

Little Book of Gargoyles
This is in the same format and series as The Little Book of the Green Man.
They are lively little books with good colour photos taken by the author, Mike Harding, which would whet the reader's appetite to go off exploring in churches and cathedrals. I did end up kicking myself as I'd missed a couple after having visited the locations.
Harding, a man of many talents, also wrote the brief introduction in which he discusses the origin of gargoyles and their name and their purpose. It can be really good fun to look round a church or cathedral, often looking up, to see the odd little carved joke from an ancient stone carver or mason .
He doesn't go into great depth, this isn't that kind of book and that's not meant as a criticism as it doesn't pretend to be a learned tome, but it is fun and the sort of book that you could put in your bag and take with you.
It isn't exclusively about gargoyles as Harding also includes Sheela-na-gigs and other forms of gargoyles such as fertility symbols which broadens the book's scope.
A good book for anyone with a passing interest in the subject who wants to be entertained as well as informed.
