The Samoan islands were first visited by Europeans in the 1700s, but it was not until the early 1800s that Christian missionaries from London settled there. The United Kingdom withdrew from the western islands in 1899, when they became a German protectorate. In 1878 the Kingdom of Samoa granted the USA the right to establish a naval base at Pago Pago and as a result in 1922 the eastern islands became a Territory of the USA. This is the first annotated bibliography to cover the wide range of sources available on both Western Samoa and American Samoa.
