Bermuda is a small cluster of islands located in the western part of the Atlantic Ocean. They were first marked on a map in 1511 but remained uninhabited until a century later, when the first settlers emigrated from England. Bermudians have always depended on the sea, and early inhabitants built boats and became fishermen and sailors. As a result Bermuda has a long tradition of legislation on environmental protection. Bermuda's significance centred upon its strategic location in an otherwise deserted region of the oceans, but changing geopolitical patterns and the dawn of satellite communications have resulted in a new role for the island as a principal centre for international business. With thousands of off-shore companies registered on these islands, and a flourishing tourist industry, Bermuda is thriving. This bibliography lists more than 540 annotated references to publications on all aspects of the island.
