The princess at her christening is cursed by a wicked witch with lightness. She floats blissfully about the castle all day long and, as one can imagine, gets into all sorts of adventures. Gravity, weight, sorrow, suffering--all of this the princess misses, but with all of these she misses love, for what is love without weight, without falling?

Children's Literature

Long ago, there lived a king and queen who gave birth to a princess. Invitations to the christening were sent to all but the king's wicked sister. As a result, the princess's aunt crashed the christening and quietly cursed her niece to a life without gravity. The princess laughed as she floated about and never cried. One day the princess discovered that she temporarily regained her gravity when she accidentally fell into a lake, and a sweet-talking prince took notice of her. At night they swam together until a curse nearly dried the lake up. The prince drowned as he plugged the holes with his body while the lake refilled. The princess and her nurse tended to the lifeless prince. When he awoke the next morning, the princess cried and the curse was broken. They married and had many children with their gravity intact. MacDonald's delightful fairy tale, originally published in 1864, was revived in 2006 by Full Cast Audio. Perfectly narrated by Cynthia Bishop, this unabridged audio book was amusing and entertaining to listen to. The author's story demonstrated the power of love through the prince's selflessness and the princess's tears. This fairy tale has endured the test of time.
