Down Deep Book

I read this book because I know the author primarily, and because I read his other literary novel, 'White Man Falling', written under his real name, Mike Stocks. 'White Man Falling' is really very good, a very interesting novel and most beautifully written. He is also an excellent poet. He always writes sonnets and his sonnet collection, 'Folly' is very good indeed. He is a true poet, in fact.

He was very off-hand about this book, in the way that literary writers are about money-spinners. I read it anyway. I used to write romantic fiction, so I'm not prone to knocking genre writing. It's harder than it looks or more people would do it.

The cover has Croft billed as a Michael Crichton look-alike.

It is a good read. I rather liked the central idea, which was of whales communicating with people about bad stuff (done by Man) at the bottom of the sea. It had no explicit sex in it. Interesting. I thought all thrillers had to have sex in them.

There were wee style points here and there, where the thriller-type language irked me a little, but mainly I thought it was a thoroughly enjoyable, well-paced holiday read. Mike is clever. To be able to do this AND the other stuff -- that has to be extremely rare. I would imagine, having read this, he could make a living through thriller writing.
