The Soviet Union began assisting the People's Republic of China in its establishment of a modern air force in 1950, when Soviet Air Force regiments were sent to train local pilots. This book is typical Osprey. General overview with some detailed examples and anecdotes. It details involvement of Soviet air force in air battles over Korea and as such is good view from the other side" companion to many books detailing UN (read: US) air operations. Format is established one and this book doesn't depart from it, you know what to expect.
For me the most interesting part is the fact that it's now openly admitted that Soviet Union used their regular air force units to fight in Korea. Admittedly Korean war is not something I was terribly interested in but I remember that even in 1990s generally accepted history was that while Soviets did send pilots to Korea who actually fought there there weren't that many of them and they operated as part of North Korean air force, using their planes and wearing their uniforms. This book, however, explains these were regular Soviet units who operated Soviet planes although with North Korean markings.
In that aspect it's nice to see analysis of Soviet/Korean side which paints somewhat different picture than what US is selling. Of course ultimate question is who to trust more or who to trust at all. I'd say answer is "nobody fully".
Overall interesting subject and one too often ignored
